Day 1 – Friday – Arrival day
Depending on how and when you arrive in Mysore, we will arrange to meet you and take you to your hotel. Transfers from Bangalore can also be arranged at an additional cost. Meet your Tour Director at 5pm for a welcome briefing and dinner.
After dinner your auto rickshaw driver will pick you up and whisk you around the city for 1.5 hours. In the evenings the city really comes alive. It is amazing what you can see from the back of an auto and there is no better way to get a feel for the Royal City that is Mysore. There are 13 palaces, countless temples, parks and statues larger than life, it really is a beautiful city. All this combined with cows wandering the streets, people everywhere you look, more motorbikes and scooters than you can imagine weaving in and out amongst the cars, it is endlessly fascinating to watch the world go by as you cruise around the city. This will be a great introduction to beautiful Mysore.
Your Auto Rickshaw driver will get you back to your hotel by approximately 8.30pm
Day 2 – Saturday – One Day Workshop
Let the creative process begin!
After breakfast meet your Auto driver for a fun trip to the workshop that will be yours for the day. Meet your Artisan and immediately you’ll start learning about your chosen craft.
First up we will have a quick safety brief and an introduction to the tools and techniques you’ll be using.
Silver jewellery – you will be making a ring today! Our master jeweller Shyam will guide you through the process of heat treating, shaping, soldering and stamping a design on your silver ring. At the end your ring will be weighed – there is an additional cost for the silver which is approximately 80 rupees per gram. The average ring weighs around 6 grams. (equivalent to approx AUD10)
Marquetry – You’ll have several designs to choose from and our expert marquetry artisan Ashok will teach you how to choose wood according to grain and colour appropriate for your design. By the end of the day you’ll have learnt how to work with a fret saw, cutting out your own pieces and putting it all together like a jigsaw puzzle to make your very own piece of marquetry.
Textile Block Printing – After an introduction to block printing and a demonstration of the technique, you’ll be able to let your imagination run wild! With hundreds of blocks to choose from you can create endless designs. You’ll be given a test fabric to start with, and a shawl and tote bag to print. We encourage you to bring along some of your own fabric or tshirts to print. Keep in mind the fabric must be 100% natural fibres or the colour won’t take. To ensure everyone has enough space to work in, please don’t bring anything larger than 200cm in length and 55cm wide.
Your Auto driver will be on hand to take you back to your hotel where you have the evening free to explore Mysore. Ask us for tips on things to see and do.
Days 3 – Sunday – Departure Day
Check out this morning and after a leisurely breakfast we’ll head off around 10.30am.
No visit to Mysore is complete without a tour of the palace and our guide Samir will be there to meet you. He has a wealth of knowledge he enjoys sharing. He has been conducting tours at the palace for over ten years now, and learned from his father who has been a guide there for more than 30 years! Prepare to be wowed by the opulence and the rich history that lies within the palace walls.
After the tour we’ll take you back to the hotel to collect your luggage. We can arrange a transfer to Bangalore for you, or a drop to the rail or bus station if you need (additional cost)
If you can stretch your stay until the evening or add an extra night, we highly recommend a visit to the Palace at 7pm for the weekly illumination. 97,000 incandescent light bulbs highlight the outline of the Palace (you will have seen this one your tour this morning) – this sight has a real wow factor and not to be missed if you can avoid it! We can help you with extending your trip, or making these arrangements. We can also offer suggestions of how to fill your afternoon should you decide to stay and return to the Palace.
