SUSTAINABLE TOURISM POLICY

Definition:
The United Nations World Tourism Organisation defines sustainable tourism as tourism that meets the needs of present tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunity for the future. Rather than being a type of product, it is an ethos that underpins all tourism activities. As such, it is integral to all aspects of tourism development and management rather than being an add-on component. The objective of sustainable tourism is to retain the economic and social advantages of tourism development while reducing or mitigating any undesirable impacts on the natural, historic, cultural or social environment. This is achieved by balancing the needs of tourists with those of the destination.

Community
At Skillstourism Pty Ltd (abbreviated to “Skillstourism”) we build long term relationships with local craftisans and their families. By consulting with the local community we aim for minimum disruption and maximum benefit to local communities. We support our instructors financially and in spirit by raising the viability and prestige of traditional craft activities which makes the younger generations more interested in pursuing craft as a career and helping to ensure these crafts live on for generations to come.

Culture
India has a very complex religious landscape and Skillstourism activities are sensitive to local customs and beliefs. Our instructors, drivers or partners will never be pressured to forego their customary festivals, rituals and obligations in order to take part in a Skillstourism activity. Our workshops are often in densely populated areas and we will never impede a street festival or disrespect a public religious observance.

Environment
Workshops in India can sometimes be observed to be environmentally damaging. Therefore Skillstourism is constantly endeavouring to find ways to decrease the noise, dust, toxic chemicals, effluent and hard waste. This is achieved by awareness, engineering solutions, and supplanting of offending chemicals or processes. Constant dialogue with craftisans and vigilant observance makes our partnering workshops maintain standards well in excess of what local ordinances require.

Economic
Skillstourism activities by their very nature empower the humble craftisans who are usually excluded by the technological advances around them. By paying fair wages this supports the local economy directly. This is observed absolutely for all our partners providing accommodation, transport, sightseeing, and other activities. Skillstourism will never engage in any coercive wage tactics for profit, create monopolies or any other unfair and unhealthy competitiveness.

Health and Safety
None of our instructors, drivers or guides should ever suffer an injury of any kind while participating in a Skillstourism activity. Therefore we provide detailed instructions, equipment inspections and safe timelines and processes to reduce all foreseen hazards. See environmental controls above.

Climate Change
The application of traditional crafting methods by the use of hand tools produces zero emissions.  As Skillstourism classes emphasize traditional methods we encourage participants to continue these same methods on their return to their home countries. This is an integral part of our philosophy to keep making things as simple as possible with absolute minimum use of carbon based technologies.
