Textile Block Printing

A wonderful technique for printing on fabric that has been part of Indian culture for centuries. Choose from hundreds of carved wooden blocks and let your creativity run wild!

Every day on the streets of India there is an explosion of colour, patterns and designs in the most exquisite fabrics.  Wood block printing is an ancient technique of printing on fabric.  It is the earliest of all methods of textile printing and the wooden blocks used are carved by hand from teak.  Block printing by hand is a slow process, but you can achieve highly artistic results and create your own unique designs by combining different shapes and styles, not to mention colours!

Our instructors Kanchan and Varsha share a love of textiles and design.  For 16 years they have been servicing their local community creating beautiful custom made clothing.  Their workshop does everything from dyeing fabric, embroidery and bead work, garment making and of course, our favourite – block printing!  Fairoz has been with them from the beginning.  His eye for matching colours and creating patterns using these amazing hand carved blocks is incredible.  He’ll show you how to mix colours, lay out your design, line up the blocks to create continuous patterns and borders and measure out the spacing between the blocks if you want to create a symmetrical design.

There are hundreds of blocks to choose from so be ready to be overwhelmed with choices!  Fabric will be supplied for your test pieces on day one, and then we’ll take you to a fabric shop where you can choose your own fabric and colours depending on what you plan to make.  You’ll be taking home some one off, original designs and a rich experience of learning a new skill with our friendly team from Chromatic Creations.
